How to Choose the Best Bathroom Fitters in Edinburgh

This is the most important question and the one most people forget to ask. Many bathroom companies — including well-known national chains — do not employ their own fitters. They sell you the bathroom in a showroom, then outsource the installation to whoever is available locally. You end up with fitters you have never met, who have no relationship with the company, and who may be juggling three other jobs that week. Ask directly: "Are the people who fit my bathroom your employees?" If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, think carefully.

An estimate is a guess. A fixed price is a commitment. Many fitters will give you an estimate over the phone or from a quick look at the room, then add extras once the work starts — "the plumbing is more complicated than expected", "the floor needs more prep", "the waste pipe route has changed". A proper bathroom company visits your home, measures everything, checks the plumbing and electrics, and gives you a fixed price that does not change. If they will not commit to a fixed price after a home visit, walk away.

Any quote given without a home visit is an estimate in disguise. Edinburgh bathrooms have quirks — tenement plumbing, lath and plaster walls, timber floors that flex, tight stairwell access in Marchmont and Stockbridge. A fitter who quotes without seeing these things is either going to surprise you with extras later or cut corners to stay within their number. Many quotes look cheap until you realise they are supply-only, or fitting-only, or they exclude waste removal. Compare like for like. A competent, dedicated team should complete most bathrooms in 5-7 days. If someone is quoting 2-3 weeks, they are either not dedicating a full team to your job or they are managing multiple projects at once. Ask how many days they will be on site, and whether the same team will be there every day. Consistency matters — a different person every morning means repeated explanations and wasted time.

Paying a large deposit before work starts is a risk. Materials can be ordered without you fronting the cash if the company is financially stable. Some companies ask for 50% upfront — that is a red flag. A reasonable structure might be a small booking deposit with the balance on completion, or no deposit at all. Ask what happens to your money if they do not finish the job or go out of business mid-install.

A national chain covers the whole UK. A general builder does bathrooms, kitchens, extensions, and loft conversions. Neither of these is a specialist. Edinburgh has specific challenges — tenement access, older plumbing, stone walls, timber sub-floors — that a local specialist handles routinely. Ask how many bathrooms they have fitted in Edinburgh in the last 6 months. If they cannot answer confidently, they are not specialists.
